Both roller games use a type of wheeled skate but inline hockey uses inline skates rather than roller skates or “quads”.
This is a year-round dry-land version of ice and roller hockey (often referred to as road hockey and played on a hard surface), usually asphalt. Unlike other team sports such as wheelchair basketball and rugby — inline sledge hockey lacks a classification point system to determine eligibility for players. Inline sledge hockey follows the same rules as inline puck hockey, which is based on ice sledge hockey and played off-ice with inline skates. Conversely, the variant based on a ball is regulated by the International Inline Skater Hockey Federation. Sledge hockey, which caters to players with physical disabilities, was established in the 1960s and has been renamed “Para ice hockey”. A related sport from Russia can be seen as a predecessor, where bandy is occasionally referred to as “Russian hockey”.
Field hockey is played on surfaces such as gravel, natural grass, or either sand-based or water-based artificial turf, using a small, hard ball with a diameter of approximately 73 millimeters (2.9 inches).
